And Father's Day is going to be a special type of service. Bill Mowry and the men's ministry are assembling it and they asked if I would help with music. So we are going to do some familiar praise and worship music with a small band, but I am really getting stoked to work up Mercy Me's "Finally Home". It will tought to sing this with my Dad only being home with the Lord for only two years, but I really love the song and think it will touch a lot of people. Pray for me there!

Next, Farrel and I are doing the Powell Festival on June 25...this is a fun, outdoor amphitheater show in old town Powell, Ohio (Tim's residency). Farrel & Stevenson is having a ton of fun knocking the rust off of the vocal chords and guitar parts...it was kind of surprising how fast it all came back actually. But Hugh Price's bands are fantastic. His acoustic group Common Thread has some great musicians in it and they have some really fresh tunes and harmony parts. Andy Carlson is a really mean fiddle player! That group is going to make a great companion group to Farrel & Stevenson and we are working on a date at EYMC. The Embers were a good old fashion power classic rock band and they sounded fantastic, too. My small Taylor really cut through the mix nicely so I think I am going to use it heavily on our October 9 show at EYMC...see you there!

Espresso Yourself coming up!

So it has been way too long since Tim Farrel and I jammed and the time is here! We got together about two weeks ago and I have to say that it was kind of amazing that we picked up where we left off...the old songs came pouring out and we quickly realized that we needed to gig. You see we never practiced...I mean never...gigging was our practice. If we were going to learn a new song, one of us would learn it and the other would add their part. So now we have three gigs in three weeks. First, the coolest realtor in the country, Hugh Price, invited us to come out and jam at a fall festival in Granville, Ohio, and for a good cause. So we can't say no to that and we are going to collaborate on a song or two. Then Espresso Yourself in Powell, Ohio, on October 9 and then a Tappas bar in Powell, Ohio, on October 16. Fun cubed. Hope to see of you there.

Count down is on for the 16th...

I just dropped off my workhorse Taylor at J. New ideas and new music...they are such gold to me and yet it seems that I do everything I can to prevent them from coming. I got the privilege of debuting a new song this Sunday and it went well. Musically it was new for me and Brandon and Keil did a nice job dressing it up for me. What an honor. But it is interesting that so many of my activities distract me from that still small voice that tells me what to do, where to go and what to say. Perhaps that is why busy is spelled the way it is...burdened under satan's yolk. The Holy Spirit wants to help us communicate and commune with God, but we drown him out with the noise of this life. I dusted off an old hymn called "Brethren We Have Met to Worship" and did a little acoustic thing with it. I heard a killer arrangement to this song from Bard Millard's "Hymned Again" collection and couldn't resist taking a crack at. So I drug my band's guitartist, Brandon Montgomery in on it to do some rythymn work and we also recruited his wife, Libby for that classic alto harmony that makes bluegrass ring. Well, thank the Lord, we pulled it off and it was a real blessing to us. I grew up on Appalachian music so this stuff kind of falls out of me naturally, but I peppered in "I'll Fly Away" and an original arrangement of "What a Friend We Have in Jesus, Sweet By and By, and Old Rugged Cross" and it was a nice little set for our worship time at Linworth. I think we made some friends with the senior folks in our church who get a little tired of the contemporary stuff, and it was an honor to get to do it!

Mercy Me and Bebo Norman were fantastic!

So, one of my good friends, Coldwell Banker West Shell Realor Greg Tassone, hands me these tickets a few weeks ago. He says, "Jim, I don't know if you know these guys, but they are coming the Underground Zone for a private concert." I about fell over when I saw that it was Mercy Me with Bebo Norman opening!

Fast forward to not knowing if we could even get a baby sitter, and then navigating around the OSU vs Michigan traffic (Go Bucks!), we walked in, and straight to the table to meet the band. What a great bunch of guys. They signed CD's, hung out, left with a copy of "Faith, Family and Friends" and then proceeded to deliver some incredible music.

I could have stood to hear a lot more of Bebo Norman, whose new CD is really, really good. His guitarist was solid and multi-talented, playing acoustic guitar, hammer dulcimer and keyboards. But "Pull Me Out" and his song about empathy for Britney Spears during her meltdown were really stand outs.

And despite having to do some starting and stopping for a presentation by the host ministry, Mercy Me delivered a really full set. Their opener, "Time" from their latest project was just amazing, especially in such a small venue. It was a wall of sound 100 miles thick, that had Tears for Fears, U2 and more all put in a high speed mixer and 10,000 watts!

Bart's voice was absolutely crystal clear and despite the small, reserved corporate crowd, he delivered energy and his passion for worship. Kim and I listened to the CD (autographed of course) all the back. Man, what a great night...makes me want to get out and play...wait a minute...I am playing with First Sunday in the morning and we are doing Mercy Me's "God with Us"!

Watch out for that kickball!

So this was a first for me...Worthington Christian Schools had a meet the teacher night at their Westview campus and the principal Jim Parrish asked me to do some praise and worship music. And man, was it a blast. It was great to get to work with them to create something that felt like them. The prelude included Stephen Curtis Chapman's "Cinderella" and I have to say that I hate to make people cry (like with an out of tune guitar) but this was a good cry! I actually had to hold it together myself since the song hits home. I also got to do Rascall Flatts "Broken Road". Nice song. The service didn't have any music inside of it but we got to rock and roll a bit on their recessional - her singluar request was "How Sweet It Is to be Loved by You" and with Kim on the piano, Brandon hustling over out of the wedding party to play lead guitar (on a killer mid 60's Gibson ES 335!), Jonathan Prenosil on bass and Aaron White on drums, we had a blast playing them out of the sanctuary. So that was probably a first for Linworth Baptist Church having a James Taylor song performed and blues guitar solo! Thanks and congrats again Rob and Carol.

OK...so I don't know 2,300 people but the "Acadia Drive" video on YouTube from last year's Espresso Yourself concert just blew past that number...so thanks to whomever might be watching! What a novel idea...so plans for the summer are playing with the First Sunday Band at Linworth, doing some wedding music for a friend, and working on new material. I know that sounds cliche, but I really am! I think the band will be getting back to doing a family and friends show this fall...maybe the new music will be ready by then too. Lots going on...

So I got a new electric guitar...well, new to me anyway. It is a 1984 Yamaha SC300T. Really cool guitar that I always had my eye on in the 80's. Found it on Ebay and couldn't resist...got a great price on it and it required very little freshening...just took it apart, cleaned it, restrung it, and started playing it. I am blessed with great friends too...the guitarist in my band, Brandon Montgomery had been using my old Peavey Bandit 65 (more vintage 80's gear). It had developed some bad habits but through some electronic magic from Marc Guiett at Linworth Baptist, it screams as good as new now. Plus Brandon, built a distortion pedal for me...yes, built one. My Fishman Loudbox amp that I use to play out, was designed for acoustic playing so it does not have overdrive built in, but with this pedal I won't have to haul two amps...very cool...so stay tuned for some new live music this fall...no doubt with the new electric.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://jimstevensonmusic.blogspot.com/2008/06/man-lots-going-on.html' title='Man! I am always troubled when confronted with people who accept "good enough" too easily...so for this little set, I dusted off some old tunes and religious standards.

"Victory in Jesus", "I'll Fly Away", "How Great Thou Art." And I was going to play them without my guys in the band, and do a solo acoustic thing.

The main reason for Victory in Jesus was that it is the favorite song of one of our ailing saints, Fowler Hopkins who is wrestling cancer. I was not sure if he was going to be in church or not, but it didn't really matter since I wanted to do it either way.

Well after dedicating the song to Hoppy, one of the ushers, Don Sutton, ran and dialed up Hoppy on the lobby phone and held it up so he could hear it. Good thing I did not know that since it would have busted me up...anyway the set went really well...the spirit was there for sure. Don told me afterward and it really warmed my heart.

When I got home Hoppy had left a voicemail message for me thanking me and that it really lifted his spirits. What an amazing show last evening, April 20, 2008, in Columbus, Ohio, at the Nationwide Arena, home to the NHL Columbus Blue Jackets. I've followed his career almost all of my life since he represents in my mind what an artist really is...singer, songwriter, plays an instrument. I've already made some mention of Dan Fogelberg before, but this is a long list of artists that have stood the test of time and I believe it is for the above mentioned reasons! Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, Billy Joel, Gordon Lightfoot, bands like The Eagles...probably could not get a record deal today with this Miss America approach to searching out talent...but before I go off on that tirate, back to Billy at The Wide!

I'll put as complete of a set list as I can remember at the bottom of this but what a treat to hear "Prelude/Angry Young Man" to open the show! You stepped into a time machine and it was the 1970's! He just kept banging out the hits and the obscure album tracks for over two hours with no intermissions, and a few surprises like have "Chainsaw" the guitar tech come on stage and scream out AC/DC's "Highway to Hell" and inserting "Hang on Sloopy" in the middle of "River of Souls."

The band was pretty straight forward as well. Of course Billy on piano, or as he introduced himself, Billy's Dad due to the gray and lack of hair, lead guitar, keyboards/synth, percussionionist who did vocals and some woodwinds, a dedicated woodwinds/brass player, bass and set drums. Really simple set up but tight, tight, tight.

For me the highlights were "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant", his closer "Piano Man", "My Life" and "You May Be Right". His voice stayed strong all night, and I forgot just how much of a rebel this guy was and still is! He thumbed his nose at a lot of establishments in his day, but did it in such an intelligent and entertaining way that I am not sure everyone noticed!

Well here are some of the songs I can remember, and no they are not in order!

Prelude/Angry Young Man
The Entertainer
Innocent Man
You May Be Right
Movin' Out/Anthony's Song
Allentown
Just the Way You Are
Only the Good Die Young
Scenes From an Italian Restaurant
River of Dreams
New York State of Mind
It's Still Rock and Roll to Me
She's Always a Woman
Matter of Trust
Summer, Highland Falls
We Didn't Start the Fire
Zanzibar
Don't Ask Me Why

More on Fogelberg

So I was reading on some Dan Fogelberg tribute sites that PBS was going to re-air some of his Soundstage gig. I went trolling and found it, hit the DVR and finally got to see it...amazing stuff. His concert was from 2004ish and it was immediately prior to getting his diagnosis.

Opened with Part of the Plan, did some new stuff, lots of greatest hits and the band was really amazing...and I heard Power of Gold with new ears...I got the idea of introducing it to the band...the message is so right on that it qualifies as "spiritual" in a lot of ways...either way, I really was impressed with his arrangement.

His right hand is practically a metronome! What a great sense of timing he has. One of other thing that struck me was his reverance to Leader of the Band which was of course written for his Dad. But he said that out of all of the songs he has written, if he had only been permitted to write one, that would be it....

You are missed, Dan...RIP and I hope we get to jam someday on the other side.

I miss Dan Fogelberg

It has been a few weeks and I am still not used to the fact that Dan Fogelberg has passed away. I never met the man, but the void is real and significant in a lot of ways. He taught me how to play guitar. Showed me how to write a song. Made me think about music in different ways.

Maybe it sounds a bit dramatic, but Dan Fogelberg respected music on so many levels that were only rarely recognized by mainstream pop music. Sure, he sold a few million "hits" with Leader of the Band, Longer, Power of Gold, Language of Love, Run for the Roses and on and on the list goes. But he penned songs that were better than these that never saw airplay. And quietly took stages in front of adoring fans worldwide who understood what they were witnessing was a man that had a channel to another world that few of would have ever gotten to hear if it were not for him.

I read once that Longer visited him and decided that he would make a good home for it...amazing songwriter on so many levels...I guess I was a nerd...when I was 12 years old, my contemporaries were listening to the hits of 1980 like REO Speedwagon and Journey...fine bands but I just didn't feel any depth there. I could pick up my guitar and play along with it instantly...even keep up with most of the electric solos. Fun but not nourishing. Then I wandered into my older brother Jeff's room and he was listening to Dan Fogelberg's Phoenix album...

What's this I thought? I don't understand what I am hearing...mysterious but recognizable instruments. Thoughtful lyrics that I had to read along with to vist the author's mood. From the opening instrumental to the pounding open tunings of Phoenix I was hooked...I couldn't learn it fast enough and even when I thought I did, I discovered a capo, open tuning, finger style that stumped me all over again.

The dive that I took into his music in 1980 at 12/13 lasts to today...I am still feel a sense of accomplishment when I get a little glimpse into how one of his songs is constructed. He has inspired almost every song that I have written...and I guess that is a little piece of why I miss someone that I have never even met. Because in a strange way, we did meet. Time and time again. I think we'll meet again and again in his recordings, in my writing and hopefully we know the same maker so I can finally ask him about some of those awesome and tasty chords that I never have figured out. Farewell Dan. I miss you.

Over 1,000 views! And for everyone who keeps asking, yes, we are planning a live show soon. With the arrival of Nelson into our lives this past summer, the time available shrank to zero. Plus work has been a little more consuming than I would like, but rest assured, we will dust off the old guitars and get some music out soon.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://jimstevensonmusic.blogspot.com/2007/12/over-1000-views-thank-you.html' title='Over 1,000 views! Steve and Vickie are such great people and uniquely qualified for this awesome task! But the service went really great otherwise. I was not sure that the song I prepped was going to fit in, but it did.

Sara Groves wrote the song "How is it Between Us?" and it is a featured track on her album Conversations. She is such an amazing song writer that it is actually easy to learn her lyrics. The chords were a slight challenge but fun to learn. It would have been a lot more fun with a band, but they had just played with me last week so I did not want to wear them out, and lead guitarist, Brandon Montgomery was already on vacation.

See this deal was a bit of a late thing. Our music coordinator had been left high and dry and she approached me one week out. But it worked out great. This was just another example of when God is in it, we can relax and take refuge in His work...we have to do our part...but He does everything else.

Music videos live on!

I guess I am old enough to remember when MTV and VH1 actually played music videos! It was so cool when Live Aid was broadcasted and it seemed like the whole world stopped and jammed for a little while. U2 tore the house down as did Bruce Springsteen and The Police.

But I couldn't help but realize that the more things change, the more they stay the same. These bands still are some of the best live shows going, and old clips that we only got a fleeting glance of in the 70's on Don Kirscher's Rock Hour, Saturday Night Live or later on the video channels, now live again on YouTube. It is so cool to go back and get to see those clips again.

TV was so different then because with limited networks, no DVD's, no Internet, no MP3 or 4's, you just had to soak in the moment live - because you thought you would never see it again! We went to see movies four, five, six times in the theater because when it left, your only bet was a late night TV showing 10 years later!

So here are some favorites: Kansas' "Carry On Wayward Son" and it appears in about a dozen interations. ELO is a fantastic band and their popularity in Great Britain had them appearing on a lot of shows, so there are far more clips than we ever got to see. Supertramp's "Overture" from live in Paris is a classic.

Great way to relive those musical moments that were almost lost in time!

Different Kind of Music

Yeah , I know this blog is about music, but I have to write about a different kind of music! This past weekend our group headed to Indianapolis for the United State Grand Prix. And yes, Formula One cars are music. The sound is so intense. It is hard to imagine V8's twisting and sreaming to 19,000 rpm's, and it can only be appreciated in person!

What is really cool to hear though, is the combination of cars at different points on the track. Some are trying to grab traction out of a corner, and have a thunderous rumble over tone of the traction controlled cutting the lower revving engine in and out. Some are at full throttle, shrieking down the grand old front straight with exhaust ringing through the grandstands. And in the background is the up and down whine of cars between corners.

Then throw in the air driven wrenches, track announcer, and sounds of air horns coming from the crowd when their favorite driver passes, and it is mechanical symphony!

Welcome Nelson Wade!

Thank to everyone for the flowers, well wishes and support on the arrival on Nelson Wade Stevenson. He was born at 7:02 p.m. on Sunday, June 3, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

http://picasaweb.google.com/jimandkims/NelsonWadeIsBorn

It was a very long few days for Kim and started Saturday night at midnight. By 3:30 a.m. we called the doctor on call who talked us into waiting a little longer to go in. Easy for him to say, eh? But by the time we arrived at the hospital at 6:00 a.m., things had slowed down, and they sent us home at 8:00 a.m. Kim was really frustrated but better to be miserable at home I guess.

Thanks to Pam Montgomery for saving the day and coming over to watch our other kids!

Kim gave me the greenlight to go to church and lead worship since our band is scheduled to play every first Sunday. I was a little dazed from not sleeping for 36 hours at that point but Brandon, Jonathan and Michael Clutz carried me! The music went really well, mainly because of them, and I was so appreciative that Michael stepped in on piano. He did an awesome job!

Back to help with the kids while poor Kim breathed through the pain on the couch. By 1:00 p.m. Sunday, she said we have to go! So the kids headed for the Montgomery's and got to attend Amanda Jane's graduation with them while went back to Riverside.

Things were moving right along, with only one big scare. At one point Kim's epidural had migrated too far towards her chest and slowed her blood pressure WAY down, and the baby's heartbeat got dangerously low. I have never seen so many people in scrubs come running into a room! We really did not panic until afterwards we heard them talking about the resusitation methods they had to use!

But at 7:02 a.m., Nelson Wade surprised us - of course we did not know what sex of baby we were having, but for some reason were convinced that the baby was going to be a girl. Surpirse!

And he is an absolutely perfect little boy. We are home, healthy and ecstatic. Thanks again to everyone for your prayers. God has been so good to us through all of this and has blessed us beyond our expectations!

Why Acadia, You Ask?

Some of you have asked why I have an RSS feed from Acadia National Park. I guess I have never found a place as magical, moving and inspirational as the State of Maine, and specifically the region surrounding Acadia. The combination of ocean, rocky coast, deep forest, granite mountains, clear lakes, country roads and cabin; all in one relatively small area is not found anywhere else I have roamed.

Back in the mid 90's I wrote "Somewhere In Maine" after performing at a music festival in Bath, Maine. More on that in another blog...

But "Acadia Drive" was written about the miles and miles of Park Loop Road that twist through the park, and offer some of the most spectacular scenery anywhere in the world. We have been to Acadia about a half dozen times now, but have never seen it the way twice.

This last time around, in 2006, was so special because Kim and I took the kids, and they were old enought to begin appreciating what they were seeing. And we did things we normally haven't done, like a horse-drawn carriage ride and a whale-watching trip. It is so humbling to see God's handiwork and realize that it is all going on right now as I type...the huge whales are playing in the ocean, the tides are coming and going out of Otter Cove, the lobster boats are fighting the waves to pull their traps, and someone is getting to see it all for the first time today. Pretty cool stuff.

Rediscovering my Taylor 210

A few years ago Bob Taylor introduced a "Maranatha" limited edition model 210 guitar. Kind of a cool story, really. Bob attends church where most of the guys who started Maranatha Records sometime back in the 70's I believe, also attend. They are now the praise and worship band, and to help make a contribution to the church/band, Taylor created this little 210 auditorium model with the old "dove" logo from the Maranatha brand, and donated a portion of the proceeds.

I missed the launch of this guitar and they all vanished into the dealer network quickly, but I happened on two of them in-stock and brand new at Wildwood Music in Cochocton, Ohio (maybe the best acoustic guitar shop going). It is a fabulous place in Roscoe Historical Village, and is an old house, stacked floor to ceiling with some of the best brands in the business. I had bought my Martin Backpacker from them years earlier and always stopped in the shop when doing gigs at the village music festivals.

Anyway, on the way back from business one day I stopped in, sealed the deal and brought the guitar home. I have always been so impressed with the Taylor tone and despite the fact that this guitar's body is slightly smaller than the full Dreadnought scale of my Taylor 310, the little 210 actually sounds much bigger. But there was something missing in the feel of the guitar, so it sat in case for quite a number of months before I finally got it to J. Thomas Davis Guitars on High Street in Columbus, Ohio, and they put an absolutely killer, open-tuning set up on it.

Now I cannot find enough excuses to play this guitar! It also has the Expression pick up in it which is a bit of a shift for me, but married to my Fishman amp, it is powerful.

There are few better bargains than these guitars, and I am so glad that I actually get to own one of these limited edition Taylors.

Guitar String tests

For the guitarists in the group, recently I got to test out some experimental strings from Elixir. Since I started playing guitar I have always had a body chemistry that ate strings up at an alarming rate - caustic sweat or something nasty! It's all of that Yoo Hoo I drink I guess. But I digress...

A few years ago I stumbled on Elixir strings and am absolutely sold on them. But it gets better! Two years ago they asked me to do some string tests and I actually recorded "Faith. Family. Friends" with the experimental stings on my Taylor 310. They really held tune, remained bright throughout the entire, lengthy recording period, and actually didn't need changing after months of use. Yes, I said months.

Now I really could have changed them sooner, but I was on one of those kicks, like seeing how far the car can go towards empty and still run, and the strings probably overstayed their welcome. But that's not the point.

Point is that they really do deliver long life, exceptional tone, great feel and very stable tuning. Anyway, I have a link to them if you are interested!

Great night for coffee...

What a great night everyone! I really appreciate everyone who came out and to Eric Ahlteen who let us play. To answer the burning question, yes, we are playing there again, but we have not gotten a date that works for everyone yet.

For those of you that don't know, Espresso Yourself is a new coffee shop in an old church, and is located in Powell, Ohio. The place is great with hardwood floors, an open plan, lots or original building character, and a "house sound system". Eric opened the place with live music in mind and it shows.

We had a blast and will post soon on the new date.
